How to detect fake torrents.
There are a lot of fake torrents roaming around the net these days.Even the torrent that may look real might be password protected or something else.
This is what people had to say in other forums. Quote:

![]() Because of all this I have found a tutorial that helps a lot in identifying how a torrent is. Why we have spam or fake torrents? Ok we have 1000+ new torrents daily. So we cant check all this incomming staff. We trying make our site clear but its not so simple. And of course we have some bad torrents so thats why i create this topic to help detect bad staff. So here suggestions: 1) First you must look at - its torrent files list. a) If you download movie and files list has 1 archive (*.rar, *.zip, *.tar, *.gz etc) - its probably fake. Bcos there is no reason to archive binary (archived by codecs) video. But if only 50 archives (*.r01, *.r02 ...) - its can be good torrent. b) If you see in files text documents (*.txt, *.doc, *.htm, *.html, *.pdf) read all them before: - if this files have name like "how to open this", "How to play movie", "read this before extract", "visit URL to get password", "how to get password", "Help and FAQ about movie" - its fake. - if this text files have good file name just download ONLY this files and read them (before download movie!!!). So you can download only text before start download movie, read this doc and if it has any words about visiting other sites to get password - its fake 2) Look at trackers list. If it have many trackers and only 1 of them live - its very strange. Update seeds and leechers stats. Same again? Why other trackers not track it now? Yes maybe this is fake. But its not 100% sure about this. But try avoid. Its 50%/50%. 3) Look at comments. If someone say - its fake! i think do not download this. And of course ask about quality or fake in comments. 4) look at torrent size. It can help you detect bad staff too. Small size of movie can be strange too. I hope this will help you a little to detect FAKE. Now i will show examples. Torrent "Beowulf (2007)High Quality HDCAM ReencodedUSA avi" . it looks like OK. trackers: total 5029 seeds, 9302 leechers in 23 trackers Size: 702.05 MB so 3 files. Looks like OK. example and full movie in .avi But stop. What is "Beowulf's Help & FaQ File.htm". FAQ and help for what?? Here full movie in .avi just open and whatch it. so why any FAQ and help? Strange.... Looks like bullshit. OK. getting this .html file and reading: ... rename .avi to .rar .... go to site for password ..... OK. All clear now its 100% fake. Large game, PS2, Xbox and DVD-movie releases (made to fit on 1 or several DVD's) are split into 50.000.000 byte (47,68Mb) .RAR segments. Pretty much all DVD-movie releases are to some degree compressed, and thus take up a full DVD disc. This results in about 92-96 .rar files. All of these should be of same size, except the last one. A correct and complete release should hold the following files and folders (names are examples): fancy.movie.example.dvd.rar fancy.movie.example.dvd.r00 fancy.movie.example.dvd.r01 ... ... fancy.movie.example.dvd.r95 AND! fancy.movie.example.dvd.nfo fancy.movie.example.dvd.sfv Note: in some occations the .rar segments are named differently, for instance: fancy.movie.example.dvd.001 fancy.movie.example.dvd.002 fancy.movie.example.dvd.003 ... ... fancy.movie.example.dvd.095 OR fancy.movie.example.dvd.part001.rar fancy.movie.example.dvd.part002.rar fancy.movie.example.dvd.part003.rar ... ... fancy.movie.example.dvd.part004.rar There is nothing wrong with this. This is just another way of naming the segments of the RAR archive. In addition, any film (tv-rip of series, dvd, dvd-rip etc) should hold a folder called "Sample" with the corresponding file in it: fancy.movie.example.sample.vob (if DVD-movie release) OR fancy.movie.example.sample.avi (if avi file release) Some may add additional files/folders containing cover pictures or generic release group nfo's. Some also implements an .url file to the torrent site it has passed through. The .NFO file holds ASCII text information about the release, such as what source it is from, version and original type of protection (if software), compression/data rates, what audio and subtitles are included, what have been stripped etc. If there is "PROPER" in the release name, the file shall state the reason for proper. With software, it also gives installation instructions etc. The .SFV file holds a checksum (unique signature of a file, changes with even the slightest modification of the file) of all the files in the original release. it is STRONGLY suggested to run this file with a SFV checker program (can be found for free, just google it) - to check if any of the files have been modified or broken during download. This will also tell you if any files are missing. If 1 or more files have been corrupted or modified, download that/those particular files again, preferrably from another source. Once the SFV check passes all the files, extract the .rar archive with WinRAR or another appropriate tool (Total Commander etc). Now, when the complete archive has been downloaded, there should be (without a few exceptions) NO .rar, .zip or such archived files within the main segment-split archive, unless EXPLICITLY noted in the .nfo file with the same name as the release. An avi type release should only hold the .avi file. In rare cases subtitles are included in a seperate file. A game, program or dvd-movie should hold one of the following: .bin and .cue .iso .img other CD/DVD image formats occure, but are rare. The initial release of these episodes, games and dvds as pretty much all releases today - are compressed into .RAR format, and split in 15.000.000 or 50.000.000 byte chunks. This is a general rule of the release scene, and most releases WILL be nuked if not following this rule. This is not an attempt to compress material already compressed by codecs. This is done so that if a download procedure is terminated due to manual/intentional aborting, loss of or unstable connection etc, the user can resume download later. In case of file corruption due to the nature of aboring the download, only that particular 14.31Mb /47,68Mb chunk is lost, and not the entire part that has been damaged. The idea distributing in this manner was concieved and taken into use quite a while back, when alot/most end users did not have large-capacity broadband connections. Also, this allowed for precise verification of the authenticy and integrity of the downloaded material via the SFV check. Sure now adays we could easily download a 700mb divx and 4.38Gb DVDr in one chunk, but the same benefits are still there - so why change a system that still works more or less flawlessly? Another benefit of this system, when downloading via e.g. Direct Connect (DC++ etc), is that you can get several chunks from separate users at the same time, thus cutting down download time (as long as available bandwith on both ends allows for it). If you guys find some imperfections or feel that something needs to be added to this please reply. Last edited by dukhiatma : 22nd November 2009 at 12:33 PM. |
